Learning how to grill salmon or any other fish for that matter is an essential part of grilling. It can be a challenge keeping the fish together and cooking it properly, but with practice and by following these tips you will be able to properly barbecue your fish.
The first thing you want to remember is not to marinade salmon too long. Many people make the mistake of marinading fish the same way that they marinade meats, but fish becomes mushy quickly if marinated too long. Try not to marinade salmon for more then 2 or 3 hours to maintain its firmness.
Season the salmon on both sides with salt and other spices of your choice. Add a squeeze of lemon juice. Next drizzle the salmon with a good amount of oil. The oil will help ensure that it does not stick to the grill and keep it from crumbling or breaking apart when you flip it.
For grilling salmon use a direct heat setup by cooking it directly above the coals or burners. A high temperature direct heat setup will create a nice crust on the surface of the salmon. Start by placing the salmon on the grill with the skin side up. Grill for about 7 minutes with the lid closed depending on the thickness of your fillets.
After the first side is finished cooking, carefully flip the salmon to the skin side down. Cooking the skin side down to finish the salmon will help us later to keep it from breaking apart when we remove the fish from the grill. Also try not to handle the salmon too much by constantly flipping it back and forth. This increases the chance that it will fall apart. Grill on the second side for about 5 minutes, using longer or shorter cooking times depending on how cooked you want your salmon.
The salmon is done when it is a lighter pink color and just as it starts to become flaky. When the salmon is finished cooking, use a spatula and work it between the skin and the fish to remove from the grill. Place the fish on a serving dish and finish with a sauce.
Being able to grill salmon and other fish correctly can be challenging, but a great thing to have in your cooking arsenal. By following these simple grilling tips on how to grill salmon and with some practice, you will soon be perfecting your grilling techniques in no time.
